I have always loved a good nest. As a child, I went around the house, garden, and occasionally other people’s gardens, arranging blankets, snacks, stuffed animals and crayons in various nooks and crannies. My music reflects this overwhelming love of home, my desire to provide it to others, and my fear of not ever finding it.
In high school, Home Economics was a welcome reprieve from the regurgitated material in other classes – a feature of the school system that exacerbated my adolescent misery. I rocked out Home Ec. Well, to be more accurate, I rocked out the cooking and foods portion of Home Ec. Sewing didn’t go so well (the ‘heart shaped’ pillow due in early February, was not completed until early March and was more triangle than heart).
Liking Home Ec. hinted at my affection for all things domestic. The tasks that make our daily bread (eating, baking, drinking, canning, jamming), the activities that rejuvenate us (sleeping, retreating, puttering, hosting friends) and the process of exposing our vulnerabilities (hoping, crying, writing songs, making love, making up) are the most meaningful to me. I adore wandering, but nothing beats coming home.
My mum is an outstanding homemaker. She’s the first to admit she’s no Martha Stewart, and not especially fond of housework. But she makes space for people to just be who they are, to be accepted and to be heard. She has developed a very thoughtful theory on the difference between housekeeping and homemaking that has profoundly impacted me.
So, I thought it appropriate to call this section of the website Home Economics. Check it out for regular blog entries, occasional recipes, and stories behind the songs.
