I have been remiss in regular recipe submissions and blog updates. I suspect this has not left you crying in your beer, rioting in the streets or shaking your fists angrily at the deities, but I apologize nonetheless.

The Baked Brownie: Recipe of the Month for May, 2010

Whilst in South Carolina, I went to a coffee shop that claimed to make the best brownie ever. They didn’t have any when I was there, but I fell for their display of vaguely retro looking baking books full of pretty pictures. In it, they include the brownie recipe. It yielded a fudgy, dense, frosting-free, uber chocolaty pan of deliciousness that I will share with you here. Easy to make, easy to eat and, if you feel sad, a bite of this won’t make everything better, but it also kind of, sort of will.

Double Trouble - New Home Economics Entry

Along with some cool March-related expressions (for example: "beware the Ides of March" and "in like a lion, out like a lamb"), March brings with it one of my favourite Canadian cultural rituals. I know it may seem illogical to sensible folk who would prefer to hang on to their $1.67 rather than waste it on an extra-large Tim Horton’s steeped tea with double milk that could be made for free in their office. But to the rest of us suckers (I suppose, I shouldn’t speak for other suckers), for me, those pretty red paper cups contain so much more than a hot beverage.

Shrimp and Grits Charleston Grill Style - New Recipe of the Month, February 2010

I spent my Christmas and New Year’s in Charleston, SC. Yes sir, I did. The city has many charms, including a whole new world of epicurean delights – from authentic, time-tested, family owned BBQ, to gourmet versions of fried chicken and collard greens. I was in food heaven.

St. Valentine - New Home Economics Entry

So, I didn’t write a Home Economics entry for January. Quite frankly, I like to ignore January whenever possible as it is a strong contender for being my least favourite month. Its only rival is February, which has the competitive edge of being short, but the distinct disadvantage of hosting Valentine’s Day. Or is that an advantage? Discounted chocolate is always a bonus. Ranking months is so subjective that I probably shouldn’t bother.

Potato Latkes - Recipe of the Month, December 2009

I admit to knowing very little about Chanukah, but I do know that frying up potatoes into a lightly browned jumble of goodness is always an excellent idea. When my parents lived in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, theirs was one of the only houses on the block with Christmas lights. The hood was decorated with menorahs in front windows, and local shops did a brisk business on chocolate coins and kosher wine. Along with the festive atmosphere came delicious soofganiot (awesome doughnut-y goodness) and, of course, the most famed Chanukah delicacy, latkes!

December has arrived, and whenever it does, I feel like proclaiming “Happy Holls!” in a British accent (don’t worry, I mostly refrain from doing this).

Plum Coffee Cake - Recipe of the Month, October 2009

I’m all about the plums this year. Couldn’t say why, but I get super excited by visions of plum based baked goods every time I walk by the plum crate outside Donald’s Market. Prune plums won’t be around much longer, so I recommend you put aside an hour or so this weekend to make this amazingly delicious coffee cake. It makes me wish I had a parlor to serve it in! It also makes me wonder why coffee cakes aren’t called tea cakes.
